Garo Asuka, Asuka, Nara, Japan
In 2022, I had a solo exhibition at Garo Asuka Gallery in Asuka Village, Nara, Japan. This gallery is a renovated machiya-style building. With its latticed windows, entrance, white walls, and Mushiko windows, it has the appearance of an old, traditional Japanese house—the kind we rarely see these days. Machiko, a violinist and a longtime friend of mine, came to visit and played several pieces that matched the theme of my work. Asuka is considered to be the capital of Japan during the Asuka period (6c-8c). I explored the village while I was there, and reflected on ancient times.
In June 2026, Asuka was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
